Homemade Peanut Butter Sweet Potato Treats for Chickens + Dogs

These healthy homemade treats will do double duty since both your chickens and your dogs will love them.

Even before all the dog treat recalls in recent years, I have always loved making homemade treats for our dogs because I knew they were eating healthy, all natural ingredients.

I haven't made them any treats in awhile, so when I recently had some leftover sweet potatoes, I decided it was time to whip up a batch.

I have also subbed in pumpkin for the sweet potato....and  can I just say, they were a huge hit with our corgi Winston, and even with our super picky German Shepherd Bella!

All the while I was mixing up the dough I kept thinking, wow, the chickens love sweet potatoes....the chickens love peanut butter, and oats, and molasses...so after I cut out some cute bone-shaped biscuits for the dogs, I decided to make some treats for the chickens too.

In honor of Valentine's Day, I made heart-shaped cookie cutouts and poked holes in them with a wooden chopstick so I could string them on twine to make a garland for the girls for their run.

Both the dogs and chickens absolutely loved the treats and I love that they are so healthy for them.

Sound good? Are you ready to get started?

Homemade Peanut Butter Sweet Potato Treats for Chickens + Dogs

Ingredients
3 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1 teaspoon fresh or dried parsley
2 Tablespoons natural peanut butter
1 cup cooked, mashed or pureed sweet potato (you can also use squash or canned pumpkin)
3 fresh eggs
1 Tablespoon molasses

Instructions for both Chicken and Dog Treats

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Whisk the wheat flour, oats and parsley in a large mixing bowl. Whisk the peanut butter, sweet potato, eggs and molasses in a separate bowl and then add to the dry ingredients. Mix well.

Roll out your dough on a floured surface to about a 1/2″ thickness and then use a cookie cutter to cut the desired shapes as described below. Arrange on a cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes.

Let cool completely. Store extra treats in an airtight container at room temperature.

Note: For the Dog Treats

Cut dough using a bone-shaped cookie cutter. Feed as an occasional treat to good puppies only!

For the Chicken Treats

Cut dough using a heart-shaped cookie cutter and then carefully poke two holes in the top of each heart using a wooden chopstick.

After the treats cool, string them on a length of twice and hang the garland in your run.

I love that with one recipe I can make treats for both the dogs and the chickens....but of course, then I have to explain to Winston why there were dog treats hanging in the chicken run!
