The 2014 Chicken Keepers Heirloom Seed Collections

We are excited to announce - brand new for 2014 - our Chicken Keepers Heirloom Seed Collections! Partnering with Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, we have put together ten unique non-GMO heirloom seed collections, each specifically chosen for a different purpose to aid you in your backyard chicken keeping.

Whether you want vibrant orange egg yolks, natural laying stimulants, herbs for your nesting boxes, natural respiratory health boosters, natural wormer, supplements for your layer feed, or a natural way to keep your baby chicks healthy, there's a collection for you!

Each collection contains five handpicked varieties of herb, edible flower, fruit or vegetable seeds chosen for a specific reason to help you get your spring gardening started.  All the varieties are things that you and your chickens can eat and enjoy. The collections include:

1) The Nesting Box Collection - Herbs in your nesting boxes not only help repel bugs and rodents, but also help calm laying and brooding hens, look pretty and smell nice [read more here about the benefits of nesting box herbs]. This seed collection includes some of our favorites for nesting box aromatherapy such as Lavender, Bee Balm and Yarrow among others.

2) The Egg Layers Collection - Boost your laying hens production with some herbs that act as laying stimulants. These include Fennel, Marjoram and Nettles and more.

3) The Orange Egg Yolk Collection - Certain herbs and weeds added to your chickens' diet make their egg yolks vibrant orange - naturally. [read more about egg yolk color here]. This collection includes color-boosting Basil, Marigold, Pumpkins plus others.

4) The Feed Supplement Collection - Herbs added to your chicken feed impart overall health benefits [read more about adding dried herbs to your feed here] and your chickens will love the taste of such goodies as Sunflower Seeds, Cilantro, Oregano and more health boosters.

5) The Respiratory Health Collection - Chickens are extremely susceptible to respiratory problems [read more about that here]. Help avert them with this collection that includes Echinacea, Rosemary, Cinnamon Thyme and others.

6) The Healthy Chick Collection - Of course you want the healthiest chicks possible, adding goodies like Dill, Sage and Tarragon and more to their diet from the start ensures optimal health.

7) The Chicken Salad Bar Collection - Plant the chickens a garden of their very own with this collection which includes two types of Lettuce, Swiss Chard, Parsley and White Wheat [read here for step-by-step instructions to build your own 'chicken salad bar']

8) The Natural Wormer Collection - Pumpkins, squash and other vegetables in that same family are thought to be natural wormers for chickens, as is the edible flower nasturtium. This collection includes two varieties of nasturtium, and a neat pumpkin variety as well as cantaloupe and carrots. [read more about natural wormers here].

9)  The Duck Treat Collection - Do you raise ducks too? Your ducks will love this selection of healthy treats including Kale, Watermelon and Broccoli [read more about healthy duck treats here].

10) The Edible Flower Garden Collection - Plant a beautiful flower garden full of flowers that your chickens can eat!

For the back story on how these collections came to be here and at 1840 Farm, read HERE.
