I am very excited to introduce you to Kayla from ApotheKayla who has written a guest post for us entitled Holistic Living and Chickens! Here's Kayla's story...
Let me start by introducing myself; my name is Kayla and I am a huge fan of Fresh-Eggs-Daily.com. At the beginning of this year I decided that I had to make several big changes in my life that would ultimately detoxify my existence. I started making changes that would make me feel better physically and mentally. My husband and I decided to give up apartment living and find a home in the country where we could grow our own food and herbs, I also started throwing out all of my conventional health and beauty products and making my own. I decided to start my own website sharing the recipes that I created and reviewing some of the great recipes already online.
Early on when I began researching the non-toxic lifestyle I realized how much keeping chickens would benefit this change. I was the president of the FFA during high-school, and I remembered how raising six turkeys for a project with the FFA was a lot of fun. I figured chickens couldn’t be much harder to maintain and as a perk I would receive fresh eggs! I’m not sure about you, but in our home we use eggs daily. So far raising chickens has been more fun than turkeys and I have had the chance to learn so much.
This is my first time keeping chickens and it has been a great experience! I personally feel like taking care of chickens contains a circle of rewards; I reward my chickens with nutritional food, water, and treats everyday while in return they reward me with fresh eggs! We built our chickens a coop out of re-purposed lumber that sits at the top of our garden, our garden is built in stair steps because it is on a hill; more information about our garden. We have some pretty cool plans in mind for a much larger coop that includes free range tunnels and lots of things to keep the girls entertained, we will start those projects this winter.
While raising chickens has many rewards what does that have to do with the rest of my holistic living journey? There are so many ways! In fact I wanted to share a few examples:
-Eggshells: The team at Fresh-Eggs-Daily has already shown you how to plant seeds in eggshells, and you can also fertilize your garden with them. Crushing them up to give back to the chickens also helps them receive the right amount of calcium for producing strong eggs. On my website I have an amazing re-mineralizing toothpaste recipe that you can use finely ground eggshells in, check it out here: re-mineralizing toothpaste
-Gardening: We all know that chicken manure is equal to gold in the compost pile, but having the chickens so close to the garden has really come in handy. Any time I am thinning sprouts, weeding the garden, or find a cucumber with a worm-hole in it (that I would hate to throw away) I simply give it to the girls.
-Entertainment: Laughter is great for your health, I am always so amused by something my chickens have done and love spending time with them!
One thing to remember while taking care of any farm or farm animals is your health. If you neglect your health how are you supposed to keep your homestead running? One of my favorite recipes on my website is “Dandy-Oil”.
Dandelions have so many healing properties but when you infuse them into oil the combination makes a spectacular muscle rub. After a long day in the garden my muscles definitely enjoy the Dandy- Oil. You can find that recipe here: Dandy-Oil
The chickens also enjoy the dandelions, and I’m talking about the whole plant. They like to throw the stems around, gobble down the leaves, and often make hilarious noises when they pick up the fluffy yellow flowers. Dandelions have more nutrients than broccoli and are very safe for you and your chickens as long as you do not spray any chemicals on them. I remember Fresh-Egg-Daily’s post about flowers your chickens would like, and dandelions made the list: Fresh-Eggs-Daily:Top ten flowers your chickens will love
I wanted to thank Lisa, and the rest of the Fresh-Eggs-Daily crew for letting me share my thoughts about holistic living and chicken keeping, I really appreciate it. If you would like more information about my website or would like to follow me on Facebook please check out these links:
