One day it's 70 degrees outside, sunny and warm, and the next day it's below freezing here in Virginia. Such is weather in the South. This past week the weather has been on the cusp of spring, but as I sit here typing, it's actually snowing. The signs of spring are unmistakable however - lots of mud, flower buds emerging and the longer days heralding an increase in egg production.

ReplyDeleteYes - it seems to be mud season right now. I wear slip-on shoes in the house and slip-on boots for my many trips outside to the coops (gotta collect eggs regularly so they don't freeze). I think I'm getting holes in my socks from all this slipping on and off of un-fancy footwear! But... my method has kept the mud primarily in the mud room... until my littles go running through, tracking mud into the inner reaches of the house. All farm houses should have nothing but hardwood on the floor. The carpet is taking a beating here.

Oh - and I have two pips today! (I'm very excited, lest you couldn't tell by my oddly-placed interjection - LOL.) 12 in the brooder, 8 more to hatch in the next few days and 3-4 more a week from Tuesday. I had better finish my next coop!

DeleteExciting! I am waiting for hatching eggs for the first week of March - orps, ameraucanas and sussex...and then duck hatching eggs hopefully later in March! Yay!

ReplyDeleteWhat are the blue, silvery and black chickens? I'm new to the breeds. When I was a kid, the only chickens my grandparents had were Rhode Island Reds.

Here too, my grandparents raised Rhode Island Reds and some black ones I think were australorps. We have Lavender orpington, Blue Cochin, Blue Andalusians and Blue Copper Marans (all silver) and Olive Eggers, Australorps, Black Copper marans and a Black Cochin who are all black.
