I've been wanting to build a covered 'salad bar' in the run for my chickens for awhile now. I wanted somewhere that I could safely grow grasses and other seeds for them to munch on when greens are scarce, but would allow the seeds to sprout and grow without being bothered by the hens.
I have been savings odds and ends from other projects for awhile to use and also found some boards out behind our barn that I salvaged for the project, so I ended up not having to buy anything!
The instructions below are using what I had on hand, but you can certainly adapt the project to use what you have handy. I also wanted to keep it fairly small so the top wouldn't sag when my hens stood on it, which you KNOW they will do! But feel free to size it to your liking.
Here are the instructions to build your own.
Two 3' boards and two 2' boards (I think the ones I used were 1x6s)
8 long deck screws
10' furring strip cut into two 3' long lengths and two 2' long lengths
3' x 2'-2" piece of 1/2" hardware cloth
Four flat brackets
Four flat brackets
Set of small hinges
Eyehook
Topsoil
Packet of seed
~Tools Needed~
Jigsaw
Cordless Drill
Tape measure
Wire cutters
Staple gun/staples
Pencil
~How to Build your Bar~
Measure and cut your boards as noted above.
Using the deck screws, form the four 1x6 boards into a square.

~How to Build your Bar~
Measure and cut your boards as noted above.
Using the deck screws, form the four 1x6 boards into a square.
Position the box where you want it, preferably in full sun in the run. At this point, the Quality Control team will probably want to inspect your handiwork.
Staple the hardware cloth to the furring strips. If you staple at a diagonal on the 'X's of the cloth, it won't slip.
Then screw in the flat brackets at the corners for additional support.
Attach the hinges, one near each corner of your lid. And then screw the other part to the back of the box.
Drill holes in the center front of the box and lid and attach the eye hook.
Add an inch or two of nice topsoil. At this point, Quality Control is definitely going to have to take another look!
Kick all the chickens out of the box and sprinkle your seed mix into the dirt, then cover it up with a bit more topsoil. The Chicken Salad Seed Mix from My Pet Chicken that I am using is a mix of Rape, Turnip, Mustard and Clover.
Water your salad bar well. Keep watering as needed and in a few weeks, you should have a yummy and nutritious offering of greens for your chickens !
After just a few days, we've already got sprouts !
It's been a week now and the Salad Bar is coming along quite nicely !
It's only been a week and a half, but the 'salad' is growing really fast ! Two of the girls got a little taste this morning.
When the "Salad" has grown to the height of the hardware cloth, the salad bar will be open and I"ll have very happy girls !
let them get used to the taste...
Purchase Chicken Salad Seed Mix HERE.

You're quite handy with those tools, huh? Great going! Love to have a salad bar for the girls in the winter months!

ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I love giving the girls fresh greens! I let kale over - winter and go to seed. They loved that too!
ReplyDeletePlanting a chicken "salad bar" is definitely in my plans this summer! I also saw a clever idea using pallets filled with dirt that created "rows" for planting veggies. I thought that idea could be applied to the girls' salad bar as well!
ReplyDeleteLove this article - thanks for sharing!
I am definately gonna build on for my girls
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea for 'caged' chickens. Fresh 'green' food is so important to quality egg production. My girls are all 'pastured' so they are free to nibble anywhere on the property. They do come running when they see me for treats, however!

Great idea! Just added another item to the honey-do list!
ReplyDeleteI saw this design in use at the Hill Country Tour a couple of weeks ago. I am so eager to make one of these. My chickens do not have any greens unless I free range but the hawk danger is HUGE so I am excited to have success with Chicken Greens for my chickens. They will be so happy to have free access to greens. I would love to put a metal grid over their entire pen so they could have chicken salad every where they walk. Looking forward to my salad sprouting.
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to figure out a way to grow some grasses for my chickens but knew they would just destroy anything planted in their large run . . . this is just perfect!!! Thanks for the wonderfully easy idea!

Hey, worth a shot yes? I have wanted to do this for a while now, I have the boxes in the run.... the girls inspect them every day for something new, but alas, there is nothing planted in there yet. The soil is too "hot." I'll have to bring in some new soil from elsewhere to get the seeds to grow. Will the girls "burn" the seed/plants if they leave their dropping there? How do you deal with that part? Anyway, maybe I'll get out there very soon and finish up my project. :D

ReplyDeleteLove this idea...we may not have enough direct sunlight but I think I will try it anyway...we do purposely plant grass seed around the outside edge of our fence so the hens can eat from within the pen or we can pick it and throw it to them...they love new soft grass. sharon@dalton.net `(:^~)
ReplyDeleteHow does this work with the hardware cloth, my friend tried it and we used an old pallet and put sod in it. I was worried the wholes in the hardware cloth were going to be too small. She never watered the sod
ReplyDeleteSo far so good. They've pooped on it a few times, but I just open the top and shake it off. Plenty of sun and rain is getting through - the seeds sprouted already, just a few days later.
DeleteP.S.
ReplyDeleteI did purchase some of The Chicken Salad from My Pet Chicken. I have it in planters and not sure if I will just give the girls the planter or cut it as it grows and put it in a suet cage

My chickens would LOVE the caviar! How is the salad bar coming up through the tighter weave of the wire? I wondered if it was a broad leaf that would have issues or thinner and right up through the wire? This would be a great addition to our once green but now brown chicken run. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome idea! I always give my chickens lettuce, spinach, etc., but never thought of planting them their own "Chicken Salad"! What will you think of next!? :)

I found this blog on Facebook from My Pet Chicken. This is a fantastic idea. We are fixing up part of our chicken yard(fencing it off) to grow buckwheat, oats, sorghum, kale and brussels sprouts for our chickens. When the grains are up, we will move the fence and the chickens wil be allowed to get their greens and grains. The kale and brussels sprouts will still be fenced in until mature and then will be dried for green food during the winter.
ReplyDeleteNow who doesn't like a Salad Bar! Our Girls will be able to dine and gossip in style! Mr.Rooster will have a great Chickie pick-up Bar..It will be the most popular spot in the Yard! WooHoo!

ReplyDeleteQuestion: Could you leave the top down and just let the greens grow through the mesh? That way the chickens don't dig up the plants. Was just a thought....
ReplyDeleteI am going out to see what leftovers lumber I have from building the coop(from free pallets so yay me!) and make one of these today!
